FAQ
Answers to common questions about Smart Catalog for UCP. If you run into a problem while using the app, also see Troubleshooting.
Pricing and permissions
Does it cost anything?
No. The app has no billing and no paid plans.
What permissions does it ask for? Does it see orders or customer data?
It asks for only two permissions: reading products and writing products. It doesn't request access to orders or customers, and it doesn't handle order information or customers' personal information.
Does it add anything to my storefront product pages?
The app doesn't add any display of its own to your storefront. However, if you choose Apply to product information (optional) when applying, a Product information section is appended to the end of the product description, which changes how the product page looks.
Results
Does using this app guarantee that my products will appear in or be recommended by AI shopping experiences, such as Muse?
No. We don't guarantee that your products will appear or be recommended. The app organizes your product information into a form that AI shopping systems can read more easily. The app also isn't connected to Muse or any other AI shopping service, and it doesn't send your product information to them.
AI suggestions are saved to product metafields (fields for adding extra information to Shopify products). However, Shopify's official documentation doesn't state whether the product information that AI uses includes product metafields. What it does state explicitly includes the product title, description, price, and variants. If you also append to the product description when applying, the information is included in the description, which is one of those explicitly listed fields.
Can I trust the AI suggestions as they are?
Always review them. Suggestions are based only on your current product information. Items marked AI estimate are inferred by AI from the product information and may not be accurate, so they start out unchecked for applying. You can edit the AI suggestion column before applying.
Product descriptions and applying
Will my product description be rewritten?
Your existing product description isn't changed. Only when you check Apply to product information (optional) is a Product information section appended to the end of the description. When you check it, a confirmation appears, and choosing Cancel leaves it unchecked. If a product already has a Product information section from an earlier append and you append again, that section is replaced with the new content. The section is never duplicated.
Does it improve product titles?
The suggestion covers these items: AI summary, Target customer, Use cases, Usage scenes, Key features, Materials, Specifications, Comparison points, Gift occasions, and Cautions. There are no suggestions for product titles.
Where in the Shopify admin can I check or edit what was applied?
You can find it in the metafields section of the product page in the Shopify admin. Store staff can review and edit it there. On the app's diagnosis screen, Open product in Shopify opens that product's page in a new tab.
The names in the admin differ slightly from those in the app.
| Name in the app | Name in the Shopify admin |
|---|---|
| Target customer | Target customers |
| Use cases | Use cases |
| Usage scenes | Usage scenes |
| Key features | Key features |
| Materials | Materials |
| Specifications | Specifications |
| Comparison points | Comparison points |
| Gift occasions | Gift occasions |
| Cautions | Cautions |
| AI summary | AI summary |
A last-optimized date field (Last optimized) is also saved automatically. You can view it, but you can't edit it.
I undid a change, but the Applied to Shopify count didn't go down
Applied to Shopify counts the products that have had a suggestion applied at least once. Undoing a change doesn't reduce it. Likewise, under Getting started on the home screen, 2. Optimize your lowest-scoring products with AI and 3. Apply the suggestions to Shopify never go back to Not done once they show Done. Only 1. Finish scanning your products temporarily goes back to Not done while a rescan runs, and returns to Done when the scan finishes.
Scores
Are metafields I added myself used in the score?
No. The score uses only this app's own fields and your Shopify product information. No matter how much you fill in metafields you added yourself, the score won't change.
When I search by product name, I can't filter by verdict
This is expected. You can't filter by verdict while searching by product name, or while the sort order is Recently updated or Product name (A→Z). To filter by verdict, clear the search text and set the sort order to an option such as Lowest score first. For details, see Finding and filtering products.
Are draft products included in the catalog score?
Yes. The catalog score is the average score of all scanned products, including drafts and archived products.
Language
If I change Display and notification language, does the language of AI suggestions change too?
No. AI suggestions are written in the same language as the product title and description (Japanese or English). Display and notification language sets the language of the app's screens and the welcome email.
Stopping use of the app
What happens to the information I applied if I uninstall?
The management data the app stored, such as scores, is deleted. Settings such as Display and notification language are deleted when Shopify sends the store data deletion request, about 48 hours after you uninstall. Values applied to product metafields may remain for a while, but how long they remain isn't guaranteed. A Product information section appended to a product description stays, because it's part of the description. For details, see Uninstalling and your data.
